Can You Replace Just the Kitchen Doors and Keep the Cabinets?

The short answer

Yes, if the cabinet boxes are sound and the layout still works. New doors and drawer fronts can change the look without a full new kitchen. But they must fit the old boxes and fittings. Check weak panels, loose hinge fixings and water damage before ordering. A new door cannot fix a weak cupboard.

1. Be clear about what stays

The cabinet box is the fixed body behind a door. Some fitters call it the carcass. A shutter is the door. A drawer front is the panel you see when the drawer is closed. Changing these fronts does not give you a new box or more storage space.

A door-only update can suit a kitchen that works well but looks worn. It will not move a sink, make a narrow drawer wider or fix a poor cooking path. Write down the daily problem first. If it is only the look, start small.

IKEA India says doors and drawer fronts can be changed on its METOD kitchens. That is a named system, not a promise that shop-bought doors fit every custom kitchen. Its guidance says hinges are sold separately.

2. Check the boxes before the colour

Empty each cupboard so the carpenter can see its sides, back, base and shelf supports. Ask them to check that the box is firm and fixed well. Look for swollen edges, soft panels, loose joints and screws that no longer hold.

A door that hangs low may need a hinge adjustment. Or the fixing may be loose in a weak side panel. Ask which problem you have before buying a heavier door. Do not pull on a loose wall unit to test it yourself.

If the sink unit is wet, find and fix the leak first. One damaged box may need repair while the rest stay. Ask for a marked list: keep, repair or replace. Do not let a new finish hide an active damp problem.

3. Match the new fronts to the old fittings

Ask the carpenter to record each door and drawer front on a simple numbered sketch. They must confirm the final width, height, thickness, gaps and hinge-hole positions. A rough tape size from a photo is not a cutting size.

The hinge cup is the round part set into the door. The plate fixes to the box. Both must suit the new front and the way it sits over the box edge. Blum guidance links hinge choice and number to the front size and weight. There is no safe rule that every door needs the same fittings.

Check drawer-front brackets too. Ask if the old hinges and runners can stay, and name any new parts in the quote. Open corner doors and nearby drawers on the plan. Handles must not hit walls, appliances or each other.

4. Check all the parts you will still see

New white doors can leave old brown sides in view. Stand at the kitchen entrance. Note the end panels, open shelves, bottom trim and strips between units. Agree which will stay as they are and which need a matching finish.

Compare a sample beside the worktop, wall tiles and floor in your own light. Check both the face and edges. Ask for the board, finish, thickness, shade code and edge treatment in writing. A tiny online colour swatch is not enough.

In Gandhinagar, you may also compare fittings in Ahmedabad. Häfele lists a design studio in Bhadaj near Science City Circle. It is one place to ask about fitting options, not proof that a part is in stock or suits your old boxes. Call before travelling and take hinge photos and measurements.

5. Compare two clear work lists

Ask for a door-only price and a repair-plus-doors price if some boxes need work. List removal, new fronts, edges, hinges, handles, fitting, waste, taxes and touch-ups. Keep any worktop or plumbing work separate unless it is truly needed.

For example, a Sargasan flat may keep its sound boxes and dark worktop, then change the fronts and two hinges. Another home may need one weak sink box replaced first. These are planning examples, not project claims or price estimates. Neither calls for replacing every good cupboard.

Agree how hidden damage will be handled if it is found after removal. Ask for the added work and cost before it starts. A door-only update is not always cheaper once repairs and matching panels are added; compare the full fitted work.

6. Approve the fit, then check the finish

For an older custom kitchen, ask if one sample front can be fitted before the full set is made. This can help check the gap, handle position and colour. Confirm the sample cost and whether it forms part of the order.

At handover, open every door and drawer. Check rubbing, loose handles, chipped edges and a clear path to valves and appliance service points. Keep the shade code, fitting models, bill and care notes. Ask who returns for an adjustment.
